Theater Sets for Matzer

Year: 2012-2015
Material: various

Matrzer is a theatre group from ‘s-Hertogenbosch, close to the studio. Since 2012, Maarten has designed sets for their theatre plays. Baas’s approach to set design work interprets text, translating it into special installations.

The Sense of an Ending (Julien Barnes) is a play about a man who looks back on his life trying to remember faded away and idealized memories from his past. Like the man’s distorted memories which lack details, Baas transforms this notion visually into the set design. Actors Marijn Klaver and Lidewij Mahler perform in a living room covered in white fabric, only slightly revealing the original objects.

The Three Sisters (Tsjechov), a concert based on Tsjechov’s renown theatre play, is a performance where three sisters dream of an ideal life without taking action to realize it. Baas translates the concept of dreams vs. reality with his set design. Actors/singers Ceiline Cairo, Lottie Hellingman and Manoushka Zeegelaar-Breeveld sit on polystyrene chairs which at connected to helium balloons that float away once the actresses stand up.
